this Saturday is bargain day

Every fisrt Saturday of the month in Lapa: Mercado Mistureba. It is the coolest fashion fair in Rio, with more than 40 new designers. And great news! On the other Saturdays, the fair takes place at the Bar Emporio, in Ipanema.

It is a great place to find bikinis, cute dresses and necklaces, purses in leather or denim, to go out at night or to the day-by-day… And what’s best, everything for less than R$50,

Where to go: Choperia Brazooka
R. Mem de Sá, 70 – Lapa. from 11am to 6pm

Hey you! We haven’t finished. There’s Lavradio’s Fair, that also happens at the first Sat of the month. This one takes place in all the extension of Rua do Lavradio from 10am to 7pm. It is an antiquarian, a secondhand shop and you’ll find loads of things, such as decoration, accessories, fashion, toys, books, and so on.

For the market is not only about shopping – there’s always live music in the street, especially choro and samba, sometimes drama and dance, usually in the afternoon. And all the bars and restaurants around put tables in the outdoors, the atmosphere is of joy and party, not to mention the surrounds: the charming old Rio.

Havaianas

Posted on

Havaianas is the ultimate footwear to parade in carioca beaches . These rubber sandals almost stick in your feet, ’cause you don’t want to wear anything else anymore. It’s cheap, stylish and comfortable.

It is really easy to find a pair of them, they are sold all over the city: in supermarkets, bakeries, pharmacies and fashion stores. Prices differ a lot depending on the model and also on the place where you buy them – the official stores are always the most expensive.

Here you go a list of places I think stand out as selling points with wider selections and the best prices:

Kikarnes
R. Visconde de Pirajá 224 – Ipanema 2523-3625. A small supermarket with a big selection of Havaianas.

MG Bazar
R. Figueiredo de Magalhães 414 – Copacabana 2548-1664. Probably the most well stocked Havaiana store in Rio de Janeiro.

There are other two locations that I cant list right now but as soon as I get the adress, you’ll have them all. One of them is at Leblon, close to Shopping Leblon, the other is at Ipanema, at Farme de Amoedo St.

Bauernfest – Petrópolis

Posted on
In winter, the good thing is go up to the mountains and spend a weekend in Petropolis. It is a small and charming city very close to Rio.

For those who enjoy a cold weather, the city offers chalets and restaurants of the highest quality. In addition, the city has a rich historical past. The tour is varied: the Imperial Museum, which was the summer residence of Dom Pedro II in the past, Ipiranga’s House, a 18th century house with a beautiful garden and a great restaurant – Bordeaux, the house of Santos Dumont and the Quitandinha Palace, an imposing building built in the fifties with the intention of being a hotel and a casino, among many others. It is a lovely city!

And now in June Petropolis gains one more attraction, Bauernfest – the German settler party – which started yesterday (06/22), and is in its 22nd edition this year. The event features performances of folk dances, typical bands, choirs, orchestras, film festival, exhibitions, among other attractions. And what’s best is the typical German food. Apfelstrudel (apple pie), Sauerkraut, Kartoffelsalat (potato salad), everything is delicious – and fattening!
For those who enjoy beer, this edition will be the inauguration of the Espaço Cervejaria Bohemia, celebrating the return of manufacturing to the city.

Morro da Urca

Posted on

Many people think that the only way to get to Pão de Açúcar is by the cable car, though there’s this track that leads to the Morro da Urca, the first of the two hills, which is really worth.

It is a light trail, mostly flat, with not many obstacles. And even if you’re not a sporty person or is not used to such a thing, it is possible to do it. I suggest that you go with someone that already knows the place, all the tracks and tricks.  iBut if you’re in town just for a few days and don’t know anybody, there are many groups of people during the weekend walking up and down the trail. So, you just need to follow one of them.

The walk is only one of the ways to get to the top of the hill. You can also make the track of the Sugar Loaf Costão, which has a climbing about 15 meters, not difficult,  or, if you orefer something more radical, there are other ways such as climbing or abseiling wall. For these programs, I recommend searching for someone specialized.

Now it’s time to get down. You can take the same path or the cable car, which is a great experience too.

The last tips are: take enough water with you; sunscreen is very important as well.

It’s for free, it takes more or less one hour, it’s worth.

Lost and starving in Copacabana

Posted on

You’re in Copacabana and want to find something good to eat?

So, let’s start with Cervantes. This is definitely a must! They’re famous for its sandwiches which are very, very  stuffed, and there are so many options that it is a difficult issue to choose between all of them. It is a great option for you who is coming back from a night out, ’cause it’s open all night long. Tue-Sun, 12pm-4am. http://www.restaurantecervantes.com.br/

Rua Barata Ribeiro, 7 ljB  – Copacabana

Next stop, Pavão Azul. It’s a informal bar, in a very brasilian style. Their tidbits made them very famous and it’s a good deal to get there early to get a table and better service. You should try the pataniscas de bacalhau, made of codfish, also, the pastéis de camarão (shrimp). And don’t forget the beer, stupidly cold, as we usually say here. Tue-Sun 16pm-12am.

Rua Barata Ribeiro, 348 ljB – Copacabana

The last, but not least, for today is Toca do Siri. If your loonking for typical brasilian food it is a good place to go. Delicious dishes, good service and, A-HA, caipirinhas! Casquinha de siri (crab), caldo de sururu (mussels), and of course, the acarajé, that’s the good request.

Rua Raul Pompéia, 6 – Copacabana
